15 fun ways to use self-destructing messages
A message that can only be read once, then bursts into flames, turns ordinary news into a moment. Here are some of our favorite ways to use one.
Big announcements
1. "We're expecting!"
Send close family a note with the ๐ Surprise vibe and a 30-second countdown. The suspense of the sealed screen ("You've received a secret message") builds the moment before the news lands. Because each link works once, send a separate note to each person so everyone gets their own reveal.
2. Engagement news
Tell your best friends before the social media post. A short message with a photo-worthy line ("She said yes ๐") and the ๐ Love note vibe feels personal and private.
3. A new job or a promotion
Let your inner circle know first, without the news leaking into a work group chat.
4. Moving day
"We bought a house!" or "We're moving to Lisbon in March!" A self-destructing note lets you control who hears it first, and when.
Love & friendship
5. An anniversary love note
Write something you'd never put in a regular text. Pick the ๐ Love note vibe, which reveals as "A love note, just for you", and choose a longer timer (or none) so they can savor it.
6. A morning-of surprise
Send a note at breakfast that just says "Check your coat pocket", and hide a small gift there.
7. Long-distance "open when" notes
Send a note to open when they're having a hard day, missing you, or celebrating. Set the expiry to 30 days so it waits for the right moment.
Games & parties
8. Secret Santa assignments
The classic. Each person gets a private note with who they're buying for, and you can see who has read theirs. Read our step-by-step Secret Santa guide.
9. A scavenger hunt
Each clue is a self-destructing note whose message reveals the location of the next clue. Print them as QR codes and hide them around the house or office. Players have to remember the clue, since it burns after reading.
10. Murder-mystery or party-game roles
Hand out secret roles ("You are the werewolf") so nobody can glance at anyone else's screen later. Use a 10-second timer for maximum drama.
11. Surprise party logistics
Send the guest list the time, place and "don't tell!" instructions in a note that disappears, so the guest of honor can't stumble on it in a shared chat.
12. Birthday riddles
Send one riddle per hour on the big day, each revealing part of the evening's plan.
Just for fun
13. A spy-movie prank
Use the ๐ต๏ธ Mission vibe: "Agent, your assignment: bring donuts to the 9 a.m. meeting. Tell no one." The burning animation does the rest.
14. Confessions and compliments
Tell a friend something nice you'd feel awkward saying out loud. It's theirs to read once, and then it's just a memory.
15. Sharing a password or Wi-Fi code
Not every use is a party trick. A one-time note is a much safer way to send a password than a regular message that sits in your chat history forever. See how to share passwords safely.
Tips for a great reveal
- Match the vibe to the moment. Mission, Love note, Surprise and Secret Santa each change how the message looks when it's revealed.
- Choose the timer on purpose. Short timers (10 to 30 seconds) create drama; longer ones (or no timer) are better for heartfelt notes. Readers can always pause.
- One note per person. Each link opens exactly once, so make a separate note for each recipient.
- Use the label. Under "More options", add a label like "For Mom" so you can tell your status links apart.
- Remember screenshots exist. Self-destructing is about the moment, not about secrecy from the person you send it to.
